If happiness was the world currency, what kind of work would make you rich?

If happiness - PIC

I wrote it. Read it. Actually, read it several times and I am still thinking about this LOADED question. Last year when I was getting my hair ” sun kissed “ ( God forbid that I would ever admit to coloring! ), I was telling Angie, my beloved hair stylist,  how miserable I was at work…. How much I hated my job and needed to make a change. She casually said something that I still think about: ” I have the best job in the world, I love what I do so it doesn’t feel like it is work “…. At that moment I just wanted to start cosmetology school so I could be happy like her…. really!

A couple of months after that hair appointment, the company that I had been working for 8 years got sold. With that, the chance to make a career change pleasantly appeared….. Well, I do have to say, making a career change at 45 is not easy, but not impossible either. This past year was full of ups & downs, challenges and a bunch of lessons. Boy… Have I learned a ton!

I still struggle with the evil, evil choice between TIME X MONEY…..But there are a few things that have never been as clear:  I have never worked so hard, I have never made so little money and never been so happy!

So, as for the answer to the loaded question above….I still don’t have one to share, but I am a day closer to figuring it out…..Meanwhile: I play Power Ball, the prize is at $ 480 Million this week!

XOXO

PS – No, I did not go to Cosmetolgy School….. Unlike Angie, I do not have her hair stylist talent, dedication and calling…. Besides, I love having good talks and laughs with her every month….. Not to mention: GREAT LOOKING HAIR!!! 🙂

Lovely Lavender!

LL - PIC

Last December one of my best friends gave me a bundle of at least 150 stems of dried lavender! She knows that lavender was, is and forever will be my favorite scent. Lavender reminds me of my childhood ( “Lavanda Johnson” ), it reminds me of my parents’ house, it reminds me of my life back in Brazil.

I bought little breathable pouches at MICHAELS and filled them with the lovely flowers….. The pouches allow the scent to spread everywhere! I have one little pouch in my purse, I placed one in each one of my drawers, I have extra ones to put in my suitcases and of course…there is one under my pillow as well.

You can find dried lavender on AMAZON. 100-150 stems cost $ 8.49. (If you are not a Amazon Prime member yet, I highly recommend you become one – free shipping on EVERYTHING!)

XOXO

Can not wait for my third act!

Happy B day to me - 2

I am not there quite yet, but really, I am happy about the fact that I am aging. As simple as that.

Back in 2011, Jane Fonda shared her prospective about ” Life’s third act”, as I age, the staircase seems to be more aparent and I keep on climbing, one stair, one smile and one day at the time. Since March 2014, life became so much more ejoyable, challenging and exciting that aging makes me happy.

All my teens insecurities are gone. My twenties challenges deleted. Finally my thirties having to prove myself completely vanished. However, my fourties confidence is here to stay. I have to share that I am lucky and blessed to have had a solid foundation, a fantastic upbringing and a family that allowed me to do and to be EVERYTHING that I ever wanted. No! I garante you I was not spoiled, I never had a bunch of money or material things that most of my friends had ( and I always wanted…. ). I had enough. Enough to make me realize that nothing comes easy in life.

The one thing that is more apparent and obvious, is my dislike to have a party, a dinner or any type of gathering to celebrate ” ME, ME, ME “. I enjoy my birthday, I just do not need an audience. Now, as I age, I am less narcissistic, less egocentric and a lot less self centered…. But I still like my birthday, I like my life and I like celebrating it everyday, not only on my birthday.

As my birthday approaches, and I am almost 45 years young, gratitude is the exact feeling that comes to mind, I might have another 45 to go, and if is anything like the past 45, I just can not wait!

Here is the link of the outstanding Jane Fonda TED talk from 2011…I hope you enjoy. XOXO

From the crib to the grave.

From the crib - pic - 1

Most people hate talking about it…..It is not my favorite subject either….However, one only needs to be alive in order to eventually die. I take it you are alive today, correct? I’m not asking if you are healthy, happy or if you have any plans not to be alive tomorrow…..The fact is that we will die, one day, we will all die. Sad, somber and perhaps terrifying, but true.

Recently, I had a career change, while taking classes to get my real estate license, I heard for the first time the term ESCHEAT….I was mortified and petrified when the instructor explained what it was and then I realized: I AM AN ESCHEAT!!! What does it mean? –  “The transfer of title of property or an estate to the state when an individual dies without a will and legal heirs.” – Investopidia.com.

OK, so you are not single, you have 12 kids and 34 grandkids…..Good for you and one more reason why you should read this post! Just like you, my entire life from the crib to the grave was, is and will be ( till the day I die ) filled with wonderful people, memories, laughter, fantastic trips, romances, excitement, challenges, blessings, sorrows, some regrets, more laughter, unforgettable moments and above all: PEOPLE. People that are part of our journey, friends and family are the pillars of our existence.

We do not know when our life will end….Unfortunately, some people might know ahead of time when battling horrible diseases, but some of us might be gone abruptly and unexpectedly. This is for anybody alive today. I am hoping you, me and everybody else can use it as a tool to make everything easier for our family and friends once we are gone. Who knows, this might give you a different prospective on life, perhaps by accepting the fact that one day we will all die this will inspire you to live and enjoy life now, today, at this very minute…. We do not know how much longer we have…..So let’s make the best out of it! Like my blogger friend Christina says: “Make someday happen”!

In September 2014, comedian Joan Rivers died shortly after a routine health procedure….. Some of her funeral wishes were read during the actual funeral as she had recently written a book and mentioned how she envisioned her funeral to be….. I am not sure if you are planning on writing a book or taping a message to be played during your own funeral… I certainly am not, and that is why I am writing about this. I would like to have everything organized and ready to make life easier for everyone that will be staying behind… ( yes, staying behind as everyone that stays will eventually be following us ).

One thing that I recommend is to have a list of important things in writing and printed – you may also want to have a sealed envelope with the name of your relative or person that you choose to handle you affairs. This envelop may also be left with your lawyer or will executor.

  • Will/Trust ( Naturally ) – Suze Orman has great samples on her site  – suzeorman and there other very resourceful site is called NOLO
  • A list of all personal financial information ( bank accounts, saving accounts, passwords, credit cards, key words, pins, etc… )
  • What do you want to do with the money on your accounts?
  • A list of all people that you would like to be notified of your passing ( physical address, email address and phone number )
  • All social media names, screen names and passwords
  • Make sure to specify if you want to be buried or cremated and what to do with your ashes afterwards.
  • Pictures of you for the service; which ones do you like and which ones….”not so much”. Make a quick selection and leave, along with a letter containing all the information with at least 2 people
  • Life insurance policy information.
  • Are you an organ donor? If not, are you willing to donate your organs?
  • What do you want to do with your house, car, pets, clothes, shoes, jewelry and personal belongings?
  • Do you want a Church/Temple/Synagogue/Mosque service? Or no service at all?
  • How about a gathering event afterwards? ( I have a friend that has already paid for hers in full. No, I am not making this up! )
  • Last wishes ( if you have any ).

Until then: enjoy your precious, amazing and hopefully very long life, have fun, live it up, laugh a lot and say I love you as often as you feel like! We do not know how much longer we have and it is a shame to miss an opportunity to make someone feel loved.

XOXO, Jules

Bubbles will keep you away from weight troubles!

Bubbles pic - final

Bubbles? Yes, bubbles!

Girls, we should drink more bubbles! I am not talking about sodas or beer of course…I am talking about Champagne, Cremants, Prosecco, Asti, Cava, Sekt, Vinho Verde, Cap Classique, etc… The main reason that I share this with you is because of the number of calories in each drink. Let me clarify something first: No, I am not a nutritionist and do not understand much about that. What I have been researching is for my own drinking enjoyment and it was all done online. Since March of 2014, I have been working out 4 days a week and drinking once or twice a week. However, when I go out and have 2 drinks, I want to be wise about it and try to gain as “less” weight as possible since I enjoy going out with my friends!  This post is for people that like drinking…if you don’t drink do not read this, as I am NOT encouraging you to start now. For some of you that enjoy an adult beverage from time to time, here are my nutritional fact discoveries:

Most draft beers = over 140 Calories*

Vodka Tonic = 169 Calories*

1 Glass of Red Wine = 129 Calories*

1 Glass of white wine = 121 Calories*

1 Glass of Champagne = 87 Calories*

1 Glass of Prosecco = 69 Calories*

*Calories may vary according to each brand and serving size. Source: fatsecret.com & calorieking.com.

My drink of choice has always been and will always be red wine, however, after learning more about the calories difference and living in Florida (where is always steaming hot ) I have been liking Prosecco a LOT more! The 3 main reasons are: It is a little sweeter than Champagne, it is more affordable and has fewer calories = win, win, win in my book! A glass of Prosecco is almost the same price as a glass of wine and it is available at most restaurants.

Here is a list of some Proseccos available at most supermarkets.

( prices may vary from store to store, region, availability and do not include tax ) . The prices below are PER BOTTLE from Publix Supermarket, most likely you will find it cheaper at any Costco, BJ’s or Sam’s Club.

Santa Margherita Prosecco     $ 19.99 per bottle

Bocelli Prosecco                     $ 14.99 per bottle

Ménage a Trois Prosecco       $ 14.69 per bottle

Lamarca Prosecco                  $ 13,69 per bottle

Ruffino Prosecco                    $ 13,49 per bottle

Lunetta Prosecco                    $ 11,99 per bottle

Cupcake Prosecco                  $ 10,99 per bottle

Let the New Year Roll In

Soul logo It never fails….. Right after Christmas, we start making a list of things that we want to change in our lives when January 1st rolls in. My question and my amazement comes from not understanding WHY we need to wait to begin on January 1st? Was October 14th not a good day? November 10th was not quite right? The hope we have is that on January 1st our motivation will magically kick in and it will transform our lives and habits; we will achieve that big goal; make that famous and useless list; and follow our new routine. Sarcastically speaking (in this case typing) I am including myself on all of that. However, that is not the worse part….. The worst part is when we start reviewing the year that is about to end…. Oh my! Then, in that exact moment, it hits us – The year was filled with adventures, challenges, achievements, deceptions, happiness, some regrets, lots of joy, and all the emotions and events that happens in daily life. It is so awesome to think about this past year and gracefully turn the page as there is no deleting. There are only two (2) words that we will be able to use when looking back: THANKS & SORRY. But there is no changing. We all want to do better, be better and feel better. This is called willpower, drive, motivation and the desire to accomplish, achieve and succeed. Invite the New Year to roll in, but let’s not raise our expectations to an unachievable height, it is gratitude that will change our feelings about the good things that happens in our lives. It is also gratitude that will make you think about the “not so good things” and understand that they could have been a lot worse. Let 2015 roll in; it is a blank canvas, an unwritten book, an invitation, an opportunity, a new chance and above all – It is filled with hope! So why wait till January 1st? Be happy NOW, change your habits NOW, start that project NOW. January 1st is only a day on the calendar…Happy New Year today! XOXO, Jules
